Junior Human Rights & Gender Expert   

GIZ-AU Office/ African Women Advancing Rights and Empowerment (AWARE)

With more than 200 staff, GIZ African Union cooperates with the AU Commission, as well as the AU’s specialised institutions and agencies, such as the Development Agency AUDA-NEPAD, at continental, regional and national level in more than 35 member states. Key areas of engagement include Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention, Governance and Migration, Sustainable Economic Growth and Employment, as well as Health and Social Development.

Through a gender-transformative and human rights-based approach, the GIZ-AU Project - African Women Advancing Rights and Empowerment (AWARE) aims to support AU and continental civil society/women’s organisations & networks in the implementation of measures that promote human rights and women's empowerment in Africa. 

GIZ is seeking a qualified candidate for the following position: Junior Expert on Human Rights & Gender

Please note that the job title will be changed to “Junior Gender, Equality Advisor” during the recruitment process.

Responsibilities and Duties

 Research

  • In consultation with the manager or technical advisers, support research and data gathering assignments

Knowledge management, monitoring, and evaluation

  • Support the development of concept notes, meeting and/or event agendas, and other background documents that might be required for the implementation of Project initiatives
  • Support the drafting of reports for Commissioning Partners and contribute to the development of knowledge products for the Project and Partners;
  • Support the technical advisers and M&E expert in gathering data for reporting purposes and for the Project’s M&E tool.
  • Organize and update Project documentation, record management tasks (entering and organizing data in the Data Management System (DMS) and on MS Teams).

Implementation of project activities

  • Assist with the planning, coordination and documentation of meetings, workshops and other Project/Partner activities.
  • Participate in planning meetings with Partners and assist the technical advisers if and where needed.
  • Support the conceptualisation and design of capacity building measures for Project Partners to strengthen their implementation capacities;
  • Support the joint drafting and management of ToRs and grant agreements with Project Partners to facilitate the implementation of continental measures on human rights and women's empowerment

Events

  • Focal person for the GIZ Events Unit & for the Events Service Provider (IBF), for all events being supported by the Project
  • Participate in partner events, supporting the Partner, the Project team and IBF if and when required.

Communications

  • Support the Gender & Communication adviser to collect, draft, and submit regular newsletters and articles.

General obligations

  • Familiarize themselves with GIZ planning, implementation and reporting procedures.
  • Represents the interest of the GIZ-assisted measure and always acts on its behalf.
  • Carries out important tasks for the project, even if these are not explicitly cited in the job description.

Other duties/additional tasks

  • Performs other duties and tasks at the request of management.
Job Requirements:

Required qualifications, competences, and experience

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations, Human Rights, Social Sciences, Development Studies and/or related fields, preferably with a focus on Gender.

 Professional experience

  • Not more than 1 year of experience working on human rights and/or gender
  • Experience working in development or international cooperation in Africa
  • Experience working with African CSOs and networks on women empowerment.
  • Experience working with an inter-governmental organization such as AU or UN and/or regional organizations is preferred.

Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • Strong organizational, planning, and self-management competencies
  • Ability to manage several work processes simultaneously whilst ensuring quality of work/deliverables
  • Strong intercultural competence
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively, with a focus on joint results
  • Exhibits conscientiousness, integrity and loyalty
  • Understanding of development cooperation and international cooperation
  • Willingness to upgrade skills as required by the tasks to be performed
  • Excellent writing, reading and speaking skills in English. Other AU languages are an asset.
  • Readiness and ability to travel to partner locations and event locations, when required
  • Very good working knowledge of ICT technologies (related software) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
