Job Description:

POSITION: Mining Geologist

LOCATION: Shakiso, East Guji, Ethiopia

Project Description

The Strengthening Education for Mining (STEM) project is a Government of Canada-funded project designed to increase the number of Ethiopian men and women who have relevant skills and qualifications to work in the mining sector in Ethiopia. The project will accomplish this goal through the building of capacity in Ethiopia’s mining-related Higher Education (HE) and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, and at the community level for the small-scale artisanal mining sector.

Project and Contract Periods

The STEM project is a six-year project, operating from January 2017 to April 2023. The Mining Geologist position is a short-term technical assignment for a maximum of 25 days, including a significant number of in-field days in East Guji from June to August 2022.

Scope of Work

The East Guji Zonal Mining Bureau is responsible for the support, training and monitoring of artisanal mining cooperatives. One very important support concerns the selection of Alluvial-Deluvial placer gold and mineralized rock-hosted gold mining sites. In order to improve productivity, the Bureau will change the procedure used to identify a mine site instead of arbitrarily selecting a site.

Using available geological information and systematic exploration sampling techniques, geologists should be able to better identify pre-selected sites unlikely to contain gold and subsequently exclude them. Investigated sites can be mapped accurately with GPS coordinates along with data associated with lithologic type, structures, alterations, mineralization, and gold content. This approach will provide guidance in the selection of mining sites. It requires support through the collection, organization, processing, storage and administration of mining data.

Key responsibilities

Specific Duties

·       Meet with the relevant federal authorities (e.g., the Ministry of Mines, Geological Survey, Oromia Mining Authority) to get acquainted with the systems developed to better manage ASM (e.g., cadastral system, mapping, data collection, licensing) and clearly identify both the resources available to the East Guji Zonal Mining Bureau, and the Federal expectations related to Field Zonal Bureaus use of and contribution to the developed systems.

·       Conduct a rapid assessment of the East Guji Zonal Mining Bureau professionals to better understand the technical capacity of the Bureau professionals and thus guide the ASM mining development.

·       Based on the gaps identified during assessment, develop practical training content and timetable, and identify required material and equipment not currently available in the East Guji Zonal Mining Bureau (e.g., GPS, maps, software, computer).

·       Provide the following types of training to Mining Bureaus geologists and technicians:

-          field characterization, mapping and resource evaluation of potential alluvial/placer and terrace gold mining areas in the East Guji zone using aerial photography and remote sensing techniques.

-          Gold mining-related geology, including field mapping of alterations, shear zones and other tectonic features that serve as indicators of gold mineralization.

-          rapid field geochemical sampling for laboratory analysis to ascertain and map workable areas of Eluvial -Diluvial or primary gold in hard rocks.

-           geospatial data collection, processing, storage, and management to improve licensee monitoring and resource management; and

-          improved ASM gold recovery techniques for placer and primary deposits.

·       Produce a map for a selected area in the zone that shows potential gold mining sites.

·       Either a Master of Science degree plus 10 years of experience or a Bachelor of Science degree plus 15 years of experience in economic or exploration geology;

·       Practical experience with gold exploration and deposit characterization, ideally in the Adola gold area;

·       Experience in conducting training and developing material for training;

·       Familiarity with mining in East Guji and ASM gold mining management, in general; and

·       Available to travel to Negele, East Guji.

Interested applicants are asked to submit their cover letter and CV to Suzie LeBlanc, Field Office Manager (Suziel@alineainternational.com) by June 30, 2022. Please indicate the position title in the subject line.
