The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) is looking for qualified candidates to fill the following position.

LOCATION: DIHR project office, Addis Ababa

REPORT TO: Responsible Project Manager in Copenhagen

DURATION: One-year contract, renewable dependent on performance. Starting 1 September 2021 or as soon as possible

SALARY RANGE: To be negotiated and guided by the qualification of the candidate and instructed by levels in similar positions in like-minded non- Ethiopian organisations

    Purpose of the job:

    • The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) is engaged in a partnership with Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in the project ‘Empowering Ethiopian Human Rights Commission 2020- 2024.’ The project is supported by several donors in a basket fund structure. A project team consisting of the responsible project manager, a project economist/finance officer and a project officer operate from DIHR Copenhagen. To complement, a project team is set up in Addis Ababa consisting of a project advisor, a project manager and a project economist/finance officer. The Project Advisor will act as the responsible advisor to the partner including in areas such as strategic planning, method development, implementation of activities in key mandate areas and identified specific groups with a specific focus on internal training of the partner and human rights education activities.

      The position is subject to confirmation of the expected grant.

      Main Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Formulate tasks for local/DIHR/international expert technical assistance. Collect internal feedback by the responsible PM in Copenhagen and the partner.
      • Identify regional/international and DIHR experts for specific project inputs and stand alone or complementary assistance by local expertise.
      • Provide input to the PM in Addis Ababa to draft contracting of external local/international consultants including tender process, formulating tasks etc.
      • Planning and organizing local/international expert missions or by distance technical assistance to the partner including developing the mission programme.
      • Identify, communicate and plan exchange visits between the partner and other NHRIs, including developing concept notes and programmes for the visits.
      • Engage in briefing/debriefing, monitoring and quality assurance of expert input and output.
    • Follow up with the partner in relation to expert outputs to ensure their adoption of knowledge/expertise into practice, implementation of sub-strategies, new methods, etc.
    • Provide assistance in planning and organizing the trainings of staff in head quarter and branch offices.
    • Advise in collaboration with DIHR and other experts in the project activities concerning human rights education.
    • Provide substance input and other types of technical assistance to the partner in own areas of expertise when relevant.
    • Ensure coordination and cooperation with the regional hub and contribute to regional initiatives when necessary in consultation with the PM in Copenhagen and the Regional hub representative.
    • Provide input about the progress of project activities and developments in the human rights and security situation in the country to the internal DIHR monthly reporting.
    Job Requirements:

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • BA/MA Degree in Law, Human Rights, Political Science, or related fields.
    • 5-10 years of experience in the field of human rights for BA and 5 years of experience in the field of human rights for MA.
    • Strong organisation skills are essential.
    • Strong technical knowledge of human rights in the Ethiopian context is essential.
    • Proficient computer skills.
    • Fluency in Amharic and English (spoken and written).
    • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills, including an ability to work in politically sensitive contexts
