Job Description:

Light for the World is an international disability and development organization whose vision is an inclusive society where no one is left behind. We enable crucial eye health services and help empower people with disabilities in some of the poorest regions of the world. Our programs include:

  • Eye Health – preventing blindness and promoting eye health for all.
  • Education – ensuring children with disabilities receive quality, inclusive education.
  • Work – enhancing access for persons with disabilities to opportunities for employment and self-employment.

We focus on the poorest and hardest to reach because that is where we will have the biggest impact. We create change through local people, organizations, and structures because we want our impact to last. Light for the world is currently launching its first round of disability inclusion academy in Ethiopia.

About the disability inclusion academy

Disability Inclusion Academy is a fellowship program that aims at building the capacity of persons with disabilities to offer expertise on disability inclusion to mainstream organizations, public and private sector actors. This cohort specifically focuses on building the capacity of a selected group of persons with disabilities to support the disability inclusion project activities in Assela and its surroundings at Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State. The program starts with a 2-day selection process followed by a 5-days training. Trainees will then be deployed to project implementation areas/districts and undergo mentoring and on-the-job coaching.

Successful participants will be certified/graduated. This certification process will take a maximum of 6 months. Certified facilitators become part of a pool of Disability Inclusion Facilitators (DIFs) and provide inclusion services to implementing partners Assela and its surroundings on a regular basis and based on pre-defined activities. There are an average of two activities/per month and each activity may take a maximum of 4-5 days.

Some of the key responsibilities:

  • Inspires and builds relationships with mainstream actors: across government, civil society, and private sector actors.
  • Raise awareness on disability inclusion: through training session.
  • Put a strong focus on the “how” of disability inclusion: offering practical solutions from an informed point of view.
  • Monitor and support disability inclusion in practice.
  • Be a role-model: inspire mainstream actors to take on disability inclusion. Motivate other youth disabilities to actively seek out opportunities to better their lives
  • Mobilize and link persons with disabilities to job opportunities, finances and livelihood programs.
  • Gather pertinent information that shall inform new interventions for the various projects and initiatives of Light for the World.
  • Work very closely and in complementarity with local Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in their location. 

Employment Type: volunteer basis with a compensation based on activities performed/per month. 

Job Requirements:

Required qualification:

  • Must be a young person with a disability; between 18-35 age range.
  • Have a minimum of grade 12 ESLCE.  Preference will be given to candidates with BA degrees. 
  • Good command of English Language: - reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Knowledge of Afaan Oromoo is required.
  • Must be a resident of, Asella and its surrounding towns;
  • Be able to work effectively as an individual and also as a part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be able to attract and keep the interest of various stakeholders on the topic of disability inclusion.
  • Be able to deliver Disability Awareness Trainings, sessions on Disability Inclusive Programming, and conduct Disability Inclusion Assessments up to the standard of LFTW.
  • Conduct monitoring visits so that the supported organization knows how to put theory into practice.
  • In case of support to employers/ businesses, a DIF is expected to carry out workplace assessments, job analysis, and advice on how to make the workplace 'disability ready’.
  • Be able to have open conversations with the organization on progress made in relation to disability inclusion, discuss challenges, and source for potential solutions.
  • Translate the information into well-defined results and inspiring documentation.
  • come from grass roots, come with lived experience and closer to community and their perspective is respected.
