Green Innovation Centre (GIC)

The Green Innovation Centre (GIC) supports the Ethiopian government with the development of the agricultural sector to improve the food supply chain, foster income generation opportunities and target employment creation. The focal area of the project is to support and improve the wheat, faba bean and honey value chains through the promotion of modern agricultural technologies, tailored trainings in Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), high quality seeds and agricultural inputs as well as agro-processing and marketing. The GIC implements its activities in the Zones of Arsi and West Arsi, the so called Ethiopian Wheat Belt in Oromia Region as well as in the Zones of West Gojam, East Gojam and South Wollo in Amhara Region.

Duration of contract:   Until March 31, 2025

Responsibilities and Duties

A.        Responsibilities

The technical advisor:

  • provides support to the regional project manager and other experts
  • coordinates project activities in accordance with the GIC project objectives (provision of high-quality inputs, crop production with good agriculture practices, value addition over agro-processing, identify and implement innovations along the three value chains)
  • carry out specific tasks outlined by the regional project manager in connection with GIC’s project deliverables

B.        Duties

Coordination and monitoring

The technical advisor:

  • puts together an overview of project activities of his/her duty area, limitations, success cases and presents this regularly at team meetings
  • assists with recording and documenting the results of all activities
  • supports planning, coordinates and documents meetings, workshops, seminars and other project activities with a focus on wheat, legumes and honey production and associated value chains
  • contributes to PR work for the GIC project
  • assists short-term experts assigned by GIC project to full fill their tasks
  • cooperates with the project implementing partners and stakeholders to achieve GIC’s objectives

Research

The technical advisor:

  • supports and carries out quantitative/qualitative research studies (developing survey instruments, field trials, organizational preparation in the field, and collecting data) in consultation with the regional manager and other experts of GIC’s project

Knowledge management

The technical advisor:

  • assists in drawing up progress reports of the project implementation
  • submits realistic data and information for the establishment of a project database
  • assists in communicating, updating and collecting information of the project progress, results and impacts
  • organises and updates project documentation

Implementation of project activities

The technical advisor:

  • sets criteria and coordinates the selection of target cluster kebeles and households for wheat, legumes and honey production and seed multiplication
  • identifies reliable agriculture inputs, preharvest, postharvest technologies and agribusiness schemes which the target households could adopt and use
  • participates in the development of training materials for target households and government employed extension agents
  • carries out basic training of wheat, legumes and honey production, protection, good agricultural practices, postharvest handling and agro-processing
  • identifies the value chain schemes in collaboration with key actors so that women and youth could benefit from the business opportunity and income generation across the value chains
  • facilitates the initiation and realization of youth and women group entrepreneurship on wheat, legumes and honey value chains
  • participates in Training of Trainer courses for agricultural extension and cascades this knowledge to the extension takers in collaboration with extension agents
  • moderates team meetings of cluster members, beneficiary households

General obligations

The technical advisor:

  • will participate GIZ-GIC operational planning, implementation and reporting procedures and their changes
  • gets familiar and collaborates with other project components of GIZ and commissioned projects, conceptualizes the status of implementation and knows the corresponding experts and staff
  • represents the interest of the GIZ-assisted measures and acts on its behalf
  • carries out important tasks for the project, even if these are not explicitly cited in the job description

Other duties/additional tasks

The technical advisor:

  • assists other experts in facilitating appointments with stakeholders, beneficiary households, if necessary as translator
  • performs other duties and tasks at the request of management
Job Requirements:

Qualifications

  • At least university degree in an area of plant / crop science, cooperatives management, rural development and agriculture extension, Agri-business management

Professional experience

  • At least 5 years’ practical experience in this area
  • Experiences in project management
  • Research experiences in an area related to the programme’s deliverables

Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • Fluent written and oral knowledge of English and Amharic
  • Good working knowledge of ITC technologies (related to email, internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
  • Knowledge about ArcGIS software application is an advantage
  • Willingness to upgrade the knowledge and skill as required by the tasks to be performed - for this corresponding measure are agreed with management
